Start:  Portpatrick - Galloway

Finish: Moffat - Dumfrieshire

Distance: 157 miles

Route Overview -  Galloway

Leave the picture postcard fishing village of Portpatrick behind as you head west into the Galloway Hills. As you pass the market town of Newton Stewart and climb inland the Forest Park dominates this area. Sparsely populated, it became the UK's first Dark Skies Park. Dropping into New Galloway you then skirt along the shores of Loch Ken, The roads climb and twist through dramatic countryside, punctuated with little villages, such as Moniave - voted the Coolest Village in Scotland. Just north of Thornhill you are in gold country and even today you'll find people panning for the illusive nuggets. Tackle the Dalveen Pass which elevates you up high, with the chance to divert a few miles to Wanlockhead, the highest village in Scotland.  Dropping off the Beattock summit the end of this section is the small town of Moffat  An excellent stop over with abundance of shops, hotels and restaurants.
