Route Overview -  Kielder & Pennines

This section is a tale of two halves with the heavy forested areas around Kielder, giving way to windswept open moorland roads of the north Pennines.

A brief diversion off the route near Otterburn takes you to Kielder Forest visitor centre. Heading south cross over Hadrian's wall onroute to the market town of Hexham -  maybe study the form for a day at the races. Head o'the moor, on some of the finest driving roads in the country, Alston is your first stop with a chance to refuel both vehicle and mind in the quaint cobbled centre.

Decision time now, the route takes you north to Brampton, but if time and inclination suits you could head across the next moor to Middleton in Teesdale or SW on the A686 to Hartshead cafe perched at 1904ft.  Final drop off the moors to almost sealevel as you complete this route section arriving in The City of Carlisle - with its castle, theatres, shopping centre and mainline trains.
